A Transport Ship.

Transport Ships are a Unit that contains a defined number of troops. They are used to attack land you do not have direct land borders with.

Spawning

When spawning, the transport ship will get deployed from the nearest owned Tile by Manhattan distance. This does not ignore land tiles, meaning that a transport ship can spawn quite far away by sea distance. The target tile is selected as the closest coastal land tile to the clicked tile.

There can only ever be 3 transport ships sent at one time by any one player.

Unlike some other Units, they cost no Gold to spawn.

There are two ways of spawning a transport ship, manual and automatic. The difference is that manual spawning allows for finer control and for implementing certain strategies.

Automatic spawning

To spawn a transport ship automatically, simply left click on Terrain not owned by you, and whose owner you have no land borders with. You may have land borders with a different wilderness landmass.

Manual spawning

To spawn a transport ship manually, you can use a Keybind (default B), or you can use the radial menu by right clicking on any tile, which you do not own and selecting the blue ship icon.

Behavior

Movement

Transport ships move one Tile per Tick.

They can only move in cardinal directions (no diagonals).

Pathing

A transport ship will find the shortest path by sea from its source tile to its destination, while minimizing the amount of coastal tiles it goes through.

Given they can only move in cardinal directions, transport ships move in straight lines whenever possible. This results in slightly strange looking paths, but they are indeed the fastest.

Retreat

Just like during Ground Combat, you may retreat a boat before it has reached its destination, and a 25% troop loss penalty is applied.

Attack

They have no attacking capabilities on the sea.

After they land on their target tile, an attack is launched from the one tile, with the amount of troops which were in the transport ship. You may then add onto the attack by launching a larger land attack.

If the target tile changes owners (including to an ally), instead of launching a new attack, a single tile is captured, and all other troops are returned. This can be used for the Pixel Sniping strategy.

Health

Transport ships will be destroyed in one shot by Warship's missiles, or any Nuke.

When they are destroyed, all troops on board are instantly lost.

Strategy

General

When sending out transport ships for regular attacks, it's usually a good idea to send them with the fewest amount of troops possible, as this will reduce the troop loss if they are destroyed.

Annexation

Using several low percentage naval invasions on a coastal region which you have otherwise surrounded allows for saving on troops and time by only having to fight through a small amount of tiles to surround and then Annex the given territory.

Boat Banking / Stacking

Boat banking abuses the fact that troops in boats do not count towards your maximum population, allowing you to send with many troops a boat to a far-off land land, and then retreat it, to effectively increase your troop count way above your maximum.

Make sure there are no enemy/neutral warships where you are sending the boat, as this will instantly lose all of the banked troops.

Keep in mind that there is a 25% penalty for retreating a boat.

An alternative way to boat bank while avoiding the retreat penalty is to send a transport ship into a very small island/isolated territory (like a small amount of Fallout, or an AFK player), as this will return your troops with no troop loss.

Pixel Sniping

We can use the fact that you capture just a single pixel instead of launching a full attack when the target tile of a transport ship changes to remain extremely hidden to enemies, and launch a large attack instantly, when they think that we have no shared borders.

Alternatively, you can aim the transport ship's target tile to be precisely on an enemy's Port, if you see an ally is going to capture it, as you only need to own the single tile a port is located on to get its benefits.
